Plate 6: Luminosity Effects at B0

There is difficulty in determining accurate spectral types near B0 because the lines of Si IV, C III and N III pass through sharp maxima near B0–O9. For this reason, we give considerable weight to the fading Oil lines — together with the growth in intensity of the lines of O III — in the range B0–O9.

The lines of Si IV and C III show a strong, positive luminosity effect at B0; in addition, the hydrogen lines show a negative effect with luminosity.
