Plate 30: Luminosity Effects at F8

The spectral features between λλ3850–3890 (see Barry, A.J., 76, 324, 1971) suggest discontinuities in behavior with respect to luminosity class at F8 and G0. The F8 III standard shows a weakening of the CN features in the above region, when compared with the F8 III–IV standard. This effect, which appears to be associated with the location of class III spectra in the Hertzsprung Gap, can be seen most clearly by tilting the print.
