Plate 19: A Proto Metallic–Line Star in the Pleiades

The K–line in HD 23631 is stronger than in the B9.5 V standard, and is weaker than in the A2 V standard; the metallic lines in HD 23631 are as strong as those in the A2 V standard. Since the lines are broader in the A2 V standard than in the Am spectrum, the most precise comparison of line strengths can be made by use of broad blends — such as those near λλ4227, 4417 and 4444. When plotted at A1, the metallic–line star lies on the ZAMS of Morton and Adams, if a distance modulus of 5m.55 is used for the Pleiades.
