The Library at UCLO

The Observatory maintains a specialist library for the support of teaching and research at Mill Hill. This library is modest in size and resources; its current role is to complement the much larger DMS Watson Library located at UCL's main site in Bloomsbury, central London, and the increasing range of material now accessible on-line. In particular, many printed journals now available through the NASA ADS services have been discarded, together with a range of data CDs and similar materials now readily available through Simbad.

Third-year teaching collection. A list of the books and journals which are normally kept in the South Lecture Room.

Communications from the University of London Observatory (UCLO's earlier identity). An index to numbers 1 through 79, published between 1938 and 1989. Reprints of Comm. ULO 1 through 79 are available from the librarian at ULO. Starting with issue number 80, Comm. ULO was published only on the World Wide Web; the full text of the later issues are .

Material transferred to the DMS Watson Library, University College:

  • 1997 June
  • 1998 (Part 1)
  • 1998 (Part 2)
  • Material archived at the former UCL storage facility in Hampstead Road:

  • Boxes ULO-1 to ULO-25 (July 2005)
  • Boxes ULO-26 to ULO-37 (August 2006)
  • Boxes ULO-38 to ULO-45 (August 2006)
  • Boxes ULO-53/54/58/60/62/63/65/66/67/82 (August 2007)
  • When the storage facility closed in 2011, much of this material could not be found. Most other items were considered to be no longer of interest, and disposed of. Only items of direct relevance or interest to the Observatory were retained.
