Mixed new and old style.

We have started upgrading our website to the new UCL style and eventually all pages will have the new look. Due to limited resources this will take some time and we ask you to bear with the mix of new and old in the meantime.

There will be some changes in locations of documents but we will try to keep this to a minimum. Should pages appear to be "missing" you could check our sitemap or see our help if pages are not found.

Our site is best viewed with Mozilla Firefox, which is available for most operating systems and is standard compliant. We also fix things for Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and they should display all our pages without problems. Should you encounter problems with these browsers please mail us the URL of the page causing problems and we will fix it.

Usability and Barrier-Free Design

During the design of the new style we paid a lot of attention to usability and barrier-free design. As a rule, all pages should scale well with larger fonts being used (try Control-+ in Firefox) and display well without any styling (i.e. with page styles switched off). All pages have Access Keys implemented.

We follow the general philosophy of the main UCL website for accessibility.

Our site is a work in progress and we are grateful for any recommendations to improve usability and remove barriers.

If you have suggestions or encounter problems, please let us know by sending an email to the ULO webmaster and we will do our best to improve our site.

More Technical Details

We simply do not have the resources to test compatibility with the multitude of existing browsers and find fixes for the vast number of bugs they "feature"; instead we test our pages for compliance to XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.1 and hope that browser bugs get fixed over time. Really old browsers like Netscape 4 etc. should still display everything, although only as plain HTML pages without any styles applied.

Should you encounter pages that don't display properly please switch styles off to display everything in plain (X)HTML.

Due to missing CSS features in Internet Explorer 6 the page width is fixed. Updating to IE 7 will help to maximise the display area utilised by our website. Since quite a few modern browser features are still missing from IE 7, the use of Firefox is recommended.
